The tach to borrow/rent is a strobe tach. It has a flashing Xenon lamp that acts like a timing light. It does not connect to the tractor at all. To use it, it is just directed toward the front pulley and a knob is rotated until the pulley appears stopped. Simple as watching TV with a remote. There will be a readout on the unit that is RPM. The rated speed is 540 under full rated load, not high idle. High Idle will be more (10% is a guess) But My 5% was goverened speed beyond rated High Idle (from tweeking the governor). Unless it has been tweeked, or is assembled incorrectly it is fine. By the way--- variable (up to 50% of engine power by the seat of your pants) losads at various RPMs above Idle for the first hour and a half, Then moderate to full to modest loads varying over time (dont measure the time, just do different things and don't let it idle fro long periods) for another 2 hrs, will get it ready to use. I would not do heavy tillage for 10 hours, but after that just use it. Change the oil at 15 hrs to a synthetic 10-40(best) or 10-40 car rated oil, or 15-40 diesel rated oil. Opinions will vary, but this is solid info from 45 years of watching oil improve. JimN

It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
