It appears you are talking about the output shaft of the belt pulley. As someone said below, the flange has shims on it to set the bevel gears engagement/backlash. If you do put a gasket in with the shims it will change the alignment and cause excess wear of the bevel gears. I have had problems with the shims leaking in the past. Someone posted a reply in the past saying that it is critical to get the shims clean including removing all rust. That way they seal the best. Also, I have coated each shim with a very thin layer of nonhardening gasket cement and that prevents leakage. Another point, if you put in a gasket it will not prevent leakage as oil can leak out between each shim. Roger
