Plastigauge is a thread of polymer that is squished in the clearance of a journal bearing to chack clearance. (It assumes several things are true and is good only if the journal is round and straight, and th rod (or cap on the main) is round and straight, and the insert is correct and has proper crush). The crankshaft weight is heavy enough to flatten the material and give a bogus reading unless the crrank is held up into the block. during gauging. Remember it is a guestimate of roundness and servicability, not a great way of measuring clearance or servicability on used parts. JimN
