Barry - This diagram (6 volt, 4-terminal regulator with solenoid in the starter circuit) may be of help. It's for a Super H, but your A will be wired up the same - except possibly for the terminal numbers on the light switch. Not sure what the "L" signifies on the regulator. I guess it is for LOAD, since that's where the ignition and lighting load connections are made. To test the ammeter, temporarily wire it in series with a battery and a single headlamp bulb. If the ammeter's working it will indicate the current drawn by the headlamp (3 or 4 amps generally). Good luck!
