Red, Bob M is calling for a ballast resistor and not a voltage dropping resistor therefore he is using a 12 volt coil. With a dropping resistor he would be using the old coil and the coil would be as you stated. Since both resistors essentially do the same thing it is just the wording that further ID's the arrangement as to which coil is in the circuit. Ballast resistor with a 12 volt coil and a dropping resistor for using a 6 volt device on 12 volts. With a dropping resistor you would be correct and the coil would have been the old 6 volt one. For long life to the points you would still employ a ballast resistor after the dropping resistor. Cheers
