It was a nice day to start the MD, so I fired it up. Started easily, ran nice for 2 minutes on gas, then a clunk clunk sound and abruptly stopped. The sound seemed to come from the front of the transmission, just about where the trans. shaft starts. I shifted thru all gears, all seems normal. Jacked the tractor up; wheel turned freely. Held clutch down and tried to turn trans. shaft, which I could reach since it has no belly pump in it. I was able to free up trans. shaft - seems to turn OK now.Tractor now turns over normally. I did not try to restart tractor (I'm afraid to), but suspect something bad happened. Transmission never gave a hint of trouble before. What could have gone wrong? Any answers much appreciated, and sorry for long post.
