Current gas ratings are (Research method + Motor method)/2. I think when the 706 was built, IH used the research method, only, giving 93 octane as their recommendation. I have read that the current motor method must give an octane rating of 82--I have not confirmed this. But, if true, you solve for the current (R+M)/2 by: (93+82)/2 = 87.5 -- or the current rating for todays regular gas, depending on where you live. Another way of doing it is using 87 as the (R+M)/2 rating along with the presumed 82 motor method, and solving for the Research number. That is 87=(R+82)/2. Solving for R gives an research octane rating of 92, also from the current 87 octane gas, very close to IH's rating.
