I got your message, Big Don. I have moved the shaft with the cap off. When the cap is on, the shaft will not move. However, with the cap off, I can pull the shaft out 3/8 to 1/2 inch. Then it is setting against the rear bearing (I assume). That means that when I put the cap on, the 2 pc. rear bearing is misaligned by 3/8 to 1/2 inch. That is why I thought something in the shaft is wrong, creating the noise. However I did not know that the reverse idler turned all of the time. That is that little gear up on the side, with no bearings, just a shaft that sits in the casing itself, right? Send my an email address, Big Don, and I can send you the pics I sent p. As a test, I filled the case 3/4 full of gear lube to see if the noise would quiet down some. (I replaced all of the seals, and there are no leaks, thank you very much!) It sounded the same to me. But I didn't fill it all of the way up to the reverse idler. If I do that, by way of a test, shouldn't it quiet down if that is the culprit? Should I try jacking it up and running it slowly with the tranny top off? Would that tell me anything? Except maybe how far a gear can fling oil...
