upping HP on a stock M?

I've been looking at Ms because I definitely want to buy one, but am wondering about increasing horsepower. Some I have looked at have had power packs or simply thinner sleeves installed in the cylinders to improve HP. One guy told me he had his '49 M dyno tested (pto) at 50 HP, and figures a previous owner must have installed a power pack. But of all the machines I have looked at, I like a stock '47 M that was overhauled by a machinist who did a beautiful job on the tractor. It is, he said, 35 HP. I'm seriously thinking about buying it, but would like to up the performance at some point in the future. I plan on working the tractor (plowing, baling, etc.). Can these electronic ignitions, smooth flow manifolds, modified governors and carbs, etc actually improve performance (without doing anything else to the engine)? And is the relatively sizeable investment in these upgrades justified when looking at improved reliability and performance? Are the advertised HP increases overly optimistic? Thanks. (By the way, this discussion forum is very helpful. So far, of the few messages I've posted, there has been some sound advice.)
