I have an IH 424 Diesel tractor I am going through and it runs great and all, but the tach isn't working. I unhooked the cable both at the tach and at the housing it fastens to. when I spin the inner cable in the sleeve, the other end turns which tells me the cable is good. From that troubleshooting I concluded that the tach gauge was the culprit....especially having that it had clocked over 3,500 hours when it had broken. I ordered a replacement tach, and when it came it was the wrong rotation direction. I decided to try it any way just to see if it was in fact the problem.....I just assumed it would read backwards. When I hooked it up and started the tractor, nothing happened.
Would that tach read the opposite way, or would it not work at all??
If that is not my problem, then what would it be??

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
