Hi guys. My daughter brought her 98 Expedition, 4x4, 5.4L home with no A/C working. All fuses and relays are good. It blows air fine with both front and rear controls. The heat control when switched all the way over to hot really blows hot air. All the vents operate properly when switching from Max AC to AC to Panel to defrost and so on and I hear the door moving with the vacuum change.
The air coming out is basically outside air temperature. Her boyfriend added a 19oz tall can of R-134A last weekend with no apparent affect. The lines coming from the compressor aren't cool to the touch.
The only think I've noticed is that there is no clicking for the compressor engaging when changing from AC or Max AC back to panel or defrost. Looking at the front of the compressor, the end piece with 3 bolts isn't turning. On some air conditioners I know this is supposed to turn when engaged but I'm not sure on this one. There are two wire connectors on the compressor that are hard to reach and are basically covered with oil and grease.
If that end of the compressor is supposed to be turning, my next step would be to run it down to the car wash to clean it all up underneath and check the connections. After that I will get a couple cans of refrigerant and try that.
Any ideas on what is wrong? Just want to see before throwing unneeded refergerant in there. Thanks.
