Sounds like a Delco 10SI -- 63 amps is a common rating for this type of alternator. Does it have a post on the back of the alternator that the wire you mention connects to? (That is the output post) There should also be a two-terminal connector on the side of the alternator housing right at the back of the alternator. If so, it's probably either a 10SI (most likely) or a 13SI. As you describe the alternator wiring as having only one wire, it should be a one-wire version of the regulator. These require some stray magnetism to start up -- to induce the field you momentarily touch a wire from the positive post of the battery to one of the spade terminals in the two-terminal connector. (The instructions I've seen say it doesn't matter which one.) After that, the alternator should put out the correct voltage. s for the "regulator", it sounds like your tractor still has a cutout relay which should be removed (wasn't designed for 12v operation and is not needed).
My advice is to go visit NAPA and find out for sure if you have a Delco alternator and if it's the one-wire style or not. Post back this information and we can help.
