This past weekend (just a few miles away) a highboy trailer had a big spool of plastic covered pipe fly off and land on a car which was following the truck/trailer unit. Killed the driver instantly and to make matters worse, it so happens that the driver's wife (who was at home) has MS and is wheelchair bound. A sad story indeed. Read in the paper this morning that one of the ratchet tighteners on one of the big nylon straps apparently failed somehow and this caused the spool to fall off. Whether it broke or wasn't secured properly wasn't known at this time. Thought I'd just mention this having read a lot of the controversy on this forum over the past few years with regards to chains, straps, etc. Mind you, I guess a chain or a boomer could also give way. Not to open up a can of worms over the argument, but lets all make sure that our loads are securely fastened down whatever method you're using.
