Experiences With Engine Heaters?

I need a block heater to warm my diesel up for cold weather starting. I have seen water heaters, dip stick heaters, and an electric heater with a magnetic side to stick on the block or oilpan. The latter is the one I want to buy. Do they work? Should I stick it on the block or underneath the oilpan?
