IH Super M Elec. System Upgrade Info Request

My dad's '52 Super M has always been a pain in the butt to start with its 6V elec system. Years ago we began using an 8V battery. This helps a lot by spinning the engine so much easier, but it requires frequent recharging. The tractor is used just for odd jobs and is at low rpm's most of the time. We would like to use a common 12V battery and elec system. Has anyone seen this done successfully on a Super M? If so, did the starter need modified to survive in a 12V system? Did the 12V alternator or generator fit in the same space as the 6V? I appreciate any information someone might want to share.
