Bill, I have converted several trucks and tractors form 6 to 12 volt and never changed or had any trouble leaving the 6 volt starters. You need to change all bulbs/lights from 6 to 12 volt, add a series current limiting ballast resistor (like old ford and chevies used) in series with and ahead of the coil to drop coil voltage down to 6 volts instead of the 12 volts supplied from new battery, and add a new 6 volt regulator to the existing generator and polarize it per instructions. If it only has a cutout instead of a regulator on the generator, wire it up and it will charge 12 volts fine. Generators dont know what voltage they are (speaking generally) and will charge according to what the regulator (6 or 12 v), field current, and battery tells them. You can use a GM alternator with internal regulator if you want, but if the generator works (with new 12 v regulator) it isnt necesary. Good luck and post back any questions.
