8N Gas in crankcase

After letting my 8N (1949 model) set for a few weeks, I went to start it up and checking the oil level as I always do, I found that all of the gasoline had drained down from the tank into my crankcase. What could have caused this? Anyone have a sugestion of what I can do to prevent it from happening again? Maybe a carb rebuild; a shut off valve in my gas line? Need Imput. Thanks Frank
