Hi, I am a middle aged city guy looking for a 10 acre farm.I will maintain the farm and pasture until a later date when I might live there. I have learned much in the past few months but I am still a litte fuzzy on describing acreage in realty ads as 'pasture' and 'tillable'. It's the word 'pasture' that causes me trouble. The farms I look at have mostly pasture and I want to have about 5 acres of livestock grazing and 5 acres of crop. What range of land descriptions would the term 'pasture' apply to? Here are some questions I have to help you understand where I am coming from. Not every question here needs an answer, unless you want to. For example: - Does pasture mean that it has not been plowed in the last few years, or ever? - Does pasture mean you can ignore it year after year and always have grassy plants suitable for grazing. Or do you have to mow it 3 times a year to be good pasture? If mowed, must you pick up the clippings (hay?) ? - What is adequate grazing grass? Native wild grass and weed or those bags of pasture seed I see at the farm supply? Why would I want to buy pasture seed? Do you broadcast pasture seed, then it will come back year after year? - Should a pasture be planted with grass products to achieve a 'good' pasture or will a cow eat just about anything green and be happy? - Is pasture like my blue grass lawn, i.e., mow when needed, sparse seed when needed? If I buy 10 acres of pasture, would it be difficult to prepare it to grow wheat, clover, corn? I have heard that it takes a few years of cultivation to get a cropland. Keep in mind that I seek commonly used, practical, low cost practices verses the deep pockets farm approach. What are the big picture items I should be looking for when I look at farm pasture to buy? If I get past this topic, I might next ask about what grasses make good hay. Seems like any grass will make hay but what am I missing. I plan to buy a Ford 8N tractor and plow attachment, but I have conflicting information on it. Gene Logsdon's (farm is 32 acres) book suggest you need a 50hp tractor to farm. But it seems like the 25hp 8N will do fine on 10 acres of wheat according to other accounts. Am I on the right track? Mark

Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
