Power hookup for a swather with no key

Hi all,
I have a late 50's (guessing) Owatonna swather. I inherited it with the farm a bought a few years ago. Many parts on it look like they are make-shift. My problem: How do I get power to the engine?? The place where it looks like the battery SHOULD be has no battery, but the guy left a few battery cables on the swather, with one grounded to the unit itself. I can only assume he used that to start it. Where the heck would I attach a battery to on the engine so I can turn it over?? Your input is greatly appreciated.
