Just a passing thought, but... is the coil case grounded? The high voltage return is supposed to be through the case of the coil. If it is not grounded, it will find it's way back somehow... 25,000 volts is very persuasive about finding a home. If it is making it's way back through the points and the primary winding, that would burn the points. It would also destroy the condensor, and the insulation inside the coil that isolates the primary from everything else would be burned pretty bad as well.
