We also use kerosene heaters and the smell is definitely a problem. With either fuel make sure you have good ventilation. We sacrifice some heat for fresh air. The headaches and irritated eyes are from carbon monoxide poisoning. Be careful with any cleaners that have flamable vapors also as these heaters have open flame.
