Alternator for positive ground?

Can an alternator be used on a converted 12 volt Farmall H which still has positive ground? I just bought the tractor; it was recently converted, but not tested. The previous owner tells me he bought the "recommended" alternator (I think recommended means without internal reglator). There is a resistor straped to the coil, and the positive terminal of the coil connects to the distributer. How can I tell if this alternator can be used with positive ground? Honest. I've searched the site, and I can't find a direct answer to my question. There is a lot of useful information on the 6- to 12-volt conversion, and on polarizing generators and regulators, but I found nothing on alternators (beyond a warning against polarizing them). Thanks in advance for your help.
