troubleshooting is the natural progession of working through choices for which at the time there are only two states possible. Examples are: Yes/No - Stop/Go - On/Off - functional/non-functional, and etc. You get the picture I'm sure. Therefore, if the input is erroneous, the logical output is erroneous. When you stated that the "timing was fine," we have to assume you were experienced enough to be aware that the spark occurs at TDC only on the compression stroke. That ok, cause we're having fun - but what it does to you is just confuse you. So, the first thing you have to do in troubleshooting is be absolutely confident of your observations of the individual "states" concerning all input. Otherwise you'll just get hopelessly lost. As you are learning to troubleshoot, learn each thing "dead cold" before you venture into the assumption that a state of condition of that thing is correct. That is the way to perfect the troubleshooting game, in anything, not just Farmalls. RKS
