getting discouraged / need help Farmalldan et al

A couple of weeks ago I posted about adding a Behlen power steering unit to a SMTA. Received back several replies including Farmalldan's who stated I need a priority control valve.

I ordered a greshen valve thru Force America and have spent the last couple of days trying to get it installed. After several trips to town getting hoses made I finally got it hooked up this p.m.. Problem is I still have no p.s.

Previously the p.s. would work only if I pulled both the flow control( 2-way) and Lift-all levers back. Now when I pull out Lift-all rod the engine pulls down and 3/4" pressure hose from pump vibrates. p.s. starts to work then locks.

Here is how I have it plumbed in:
1. pressure side of pump (3/4" hose) teed into
P. port on priority valve (pv) and on to Lift- all
2. CF (constant flow) port on pv to 3/8" port on
power steering unit.
3. 1/2" port on steering unit to tee in 1" return
(bottom) hose from Lift-all. This hose then
returns to fitting under flow control, then
to hyd. filter and then to pump.
4. EF (excess flow) port on p.v. to flow contoll
5. T (tank) port on p.v. also tees into 1"
return ahead of fitting under flow control.


I looked at a friends SMTA and he had used the same valve. Everything was hooked the same except he had mounted the p.v. valve at the side of the Liftall as where as I mounted at the back of the engine under the gas tank. Also he did not have a hyd. filter. I figured while I had everything apart and had to have new hoses made it would be a good time to install one.

Do I have something plumbed wrong, or could it be the filter is causing the problem? As I said in my post heading " I'm beginning to get discouraged. It's not as if I have no mechanical knowledge. My son and I farm 2,100 acres and due what mechanical work we can, but this one has us both stumped.

To top it off, one of the rear axle seals is leaking so I decided to fix that before coming in for supper. Had the wheel almost off the axle when I discovered that it was full of fluid. Sure glad I didn't get it clear off first. Don't know if the cherry picker would have handled it. In the a.m. will call the tire man and have them pumped out.

Mom said there would be days like this. She just didn't tell me there would be so many.
