How was the engine working up to the point of you taking the head off. The reason I ask is you seem surprised at what you found so I right away think this tractor must have been working quite well in preceeding months. I had a 560D and I guess this would have happened when tractor was 10 years old. Aprox 7500 hours on meter. It wasn't head gasget that caused me to investagate. During spring croping and haylage harvest tractor in beginning develop a sharp little knock and would fade in 15 seconds or less. As time went on this happened more often. Like you I decided to find out what was wrong, pulled head and found same as you describe. I also removed pan and then pistons. I started finding pistons with rings or parts of rings missing. Found no 2 had no rings left. On final day of work it had started missing. Rings breaking up until small enough to go out stack, was what I had been hearing. Part that surprised me was how well tractor worked until last day. I had a 656D at time and there was never a question of should I put 656 on harvester and 560 on mower conditioner I got a professional diesel mechanic to come in and we decided on a piston and sleeve set. It is really quite amazing how long these old diesels will perform and how much can be wrong when you dismantle.
