Question --- shorten axles on Super C

Question , about cutting 6" off the axles on super C, the wheels are presently set at a good width and there is about 6" extra on each side, My garage doors are 108" . Did anyone attempt this with a cut off saw? How hard is the steel in these axles? As always thanks for advice. Cheers, Murray
