Alternator Problem - 10-S1 Type

Installed a rebuilt alternator on the tractor. It would not work. Took it back to the store, they tested it and it worked very well. I re-installed it on the tractor and it would not work. I checked everything and everything was in good order. In my frustration, I whacked the alternator with a wooden hammer handle. It started working perfectly. I started the engine several times and the alternator worked every time. I let it set idle for three weeks, now the alternator won't work and the hammer handle approach will not work. Is this alternator bad??
