This sounds interesting. Could do a compression check after it is good and warm and see what the results are. It is normal for a diesel to smoke white on start up. If they smoke white when warm it is usually water in the cyl. Blue smoke is oil consumption. These engines have been known to crack heads. If you are lucky maybe just a head gasket. I'm not a mechanic by trade. Could try this. Get a tube of Silver sealer and put in radiator and see if this cures the problem. Cost is about a buck and half. Good luck
