If not, try that. The presence or absence of oil and it's condition may tell you someting about shat's going on. Those finals ar notoriously neglected and you could just have some crud caked up , tough it shouldn't bind as tightly as you describe. It may also be as simple as the weight of the bull gear being on the shaft, which you can remedy with the pan off so that you can take the weight off of it. That too, though, would be odd. If you've got the retaining bolt off, there shouldn't be anything left to hold it so fast that you'd deform the end of the shaft by beating on it.
