can't start my TD-9 on gasoline - suggestions?

I have a TD-9 (same engine as WD9) that refuses to start on gas. I went through the carb. and it's getting gas, it has spark, valves & linkages are working, but it doesn't give any indication that it's firing. It does puff some smoke as it's cranked over. I can pull-start it on diesel and it runs fine on diesel. It started good on gas until two years ago, when I had a small gas line fire that burned up the wiring and distributor cap. Since I replaced all that it hasn't worked. Does it seam like a timing problem in the distributor? I'd appreciate anyone's comments or suggestions, since it's tough to find anyone around anymore that has worked on these things.
