Hey Red...CUB Engine Noise...Need Further Advice

Hey Red. I am following up from my earlier posting "CUB Engine Noise". You had suggested the rockshaft bearings as a possible source of the noise. Please bear with me (no pun intended) as this posting may seem rather lengthy: I pulled the pan to inspect the bearings (although I didn't run the engine and pull the plug wires one at a time as suggested). The pan has a little gunk in the bottom, but no serious metal. I pulled all the plugs and removed the valve cover also. I rotated the engine by turning the fan blades and don't see any "obvious" problem. I had not previously checked the valve clearances, although as I described before, the noise was not what I would consider a valve "tap"...it's more of a knock. The plugs are new and seem quite clean. The No.1 plug is cleaner than the rest with less carbon. Is is suspect, as the "knock" seems to be toward the front of the engine and nearer the top? Could the piston pin and bushing possibly be worn and allowing the piston to "bang down" after the spark ignition? I don't see any real signs, and when I turn the engine all appears tight...no slop. What would you suggest?
