As some know, I much handier on the old tractor DC generators then todays modern and electronic regulated Alternators so I have a question lookin for inputs from alternator experts.
Okay, my RV is a 2001 Chevy with 454 Vortec and I"m guessing the alternator is maybe an 80 or so amp and it works fine and a voltmeter on my battery usually maintains around the 14.3 or so range.
START OF QUESTION I have a full duty 150/300 amp solenoid by which I can (by push of a switch) connect the engine battery to my house batteries while driving via a No 2 battery cable so while driving I"m charging BOTH my engine and house batteries. Don"t sound too bad or problematic so far right?? BUTTTTTTTTT my house battery bank is NOT one wimpy yuppie semi deep cycle RV/Marine battery butttttttttttt four six volt true deep cycle golf cart batteries in 12 volts series paralell for a total of 460 amp hrs of energy storage woooooooo hoooooooo (PS I also have rooftop solar (when dry camping) and a Xantrex Truecharge2 smart 3/5 stage charger (for when plugged into shore power) for QUALITY house battery charging)
REAL QUESTION I"m worrying (if solenoid connected while driving) that huge 460 Amp Hr battery bank and big empty electron storage bank MIGHT OVERLOAD OR OVERHEAT MY ALTERNATOR?????? While driving the voltmeter still stays around 14.3 but the alternators total output current is divided among and flowing in 3 branches,,,,1) The engine battery 2) One bank of two sixes in series,,,,,,3) The other bank of two sixes in series (in paralell with the other two series 6 volt batteries)
Im NOT worried the batteries are overcharging with the alternators output flowing in three branches IM WORRIED I MAY OVERLOAD THE ALTERNATOR but I just dont know exactly how and how well its internal current regulating circuits operate so the current limit isnt exceeded?????????? I dont want to fry the alternator ya see but maybe its own protection takes care of it despite such a huge battery bank sititng there hungry to accept charging current. I do know if I start the engine and the alternator is sittin there pumping current into ONLY the engine battery THAT IF I ENGAGE THE CONNECTION SOLENOID I can sure hear the engine load down and drop slight RPM due to the alternator doin much more work!!!!
Do I need to worry about overloading the alternator or will its own protection and regulation circuitry take care of it??????
