Freeing a Stuck Engine question

My neighbor is trying to unstick his Farmall H engine. He has the head and pan off, and has filled the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil.

Here is the question... With the head off, if he tries to rotate the engine, using the hand crank, might he risk sliding a liner out of the block? At this point, might the best approach be to loosen the connecting rod bolts a few turns and start tapping with a mallet and block of wood to make sure that only downward force is applied?
