I enjoy outdoor cats. Up until last night we had one cat (who's name was Grumpy). The garage door (attached house) had been open. At bedtime my son closed the door (using electric door opener) and went in the house. I came home rather late from my brother's dairy farm to see what looked from a distance like a piece of dirty insulation hanging down from the top of the door frame. As I drove closer to the garage I could see it was our two-year-old pet cat...hanging from its head! He had apparently been atop the open door and was unable to get down quickly enough as the door closed. It was a gruesome sight. I rather quickly opened the door enough for him to drop to the ground, went to the shed, got the pitchfork, and took a rather somber walk into the woods with our now deceased friend.
We grew up on a busy road so cat tragedies from fast moving cars were all too common. We also lost them to the haymower, conditioner, machinery wheels, etc., but never to a closing garage door. I can't understand it yet. Like all cats, he was so nimble. Besides being Grumpy, he also had the title of Building Inspector. Whatever project or repair I did he was always the final word in quality control; carefully checking out every angle. He could climb most surfaces and went up and down ladders and trees in all directions. The only explanation I can think of is he was asleep when the door began to close, and simply did not wake up in time to jump to safety.
All five of us are really going to miss our Tabby Friend. Tonight's activities involve going to the local Shelter and beginning the quest for a new Inspector. Normally inspectors are not noted for having friends, but this guy was a class act. If anything wasn't up to standard he was sure to stay nearby and re-inspect when the necessary improvements were made.
