Gene, just out of curiosity, if it were mine I would put a jumper (14 guage wire or larger) from the switch to the hot side of the coil and see how it runs. This would effectively eliminate the 2 ohm resistance temporarily and give you a glimpse of what it would run like with a 6 volt coil. It doesn't have to be a fancy wiring job, don't remove anything, Aligator clips to the terminals is sufficient to try it. A 12 volt coil is just a 6 volt one that has the resistor built in. I agree that you need an internal or external resistance, but not both.
