6 quart capacity, from the shop manual, and the oil is most probably "extra" dirty from "blow-by" around the rings, and the oil consumption is probably from the same thing. The "age old" decision is when to tear down and do a ring job, which with an old tractor I would never recommend unless you planned more extensive work. Dirty oil blows by the rings easier, so try keeping the oil changed more often, and put say "one or two pints" of STP oil treatment in. All it does is thicken the oil slightly, making it about a minimum 35-40 weight. Make sure your coolant is fresh and watch the temp. Baby the old engine and you may actually get years of light utility out of it.
