Glad to hear the battery is now connected correctly to the ammeter. At this point you need to polarize the generator. Disconnect the FLD and the BAT wires from the regulator and momentarily contact the two wires then reconnect the wires as per their original location. The terminals on the regulator where the wires are connect should have stamped into them the FLD, BAT, ARM identification. After polarizing, start the engine and rev up to about operating speed and observe for charge on the ammeter. If it is charging all is OK. If it is not charging, while the engine is running, disconnect one battery cable. If the engine dies, the system is not functioning and you need to repost and I will post how to determine if the problem is the generator or the regulator. Good luck.
