ok, the voltage regulator (this is not going to be too helpful a description - it has no identifying markings on it) is a black cube located to the rear of the generator with one wire coming into the front, and three coming out of the back...difficult to trace where the wires lead... I did switch positive-to-ground, and after recharging (the dead or dying) battery i was able to get the lights to work, and now when I pull the starter ring, the voltmeter needle dips into the negative side....which i assume is good, yes? before when i tried to start it the needle swung about 5 volts into the positive, which now that i think about it makes little sense. Is this about accurate, or am i completely off base? Also, thanks for the tip re the magneto / distributor...it has a distributor, i just didn't know if IH decided to hide a backup magneto somewhere... thanks for all your help (and patience...)
