Your 6 volt system has a cutout instead of a regulator which is used to isolate the battery when the engine is turned off to keep from discharging the battery. I would not want to run this system with a 12 volt generator because if you use the tractor very much the higher output 12 generator will overcharge the battery. To install a regulator with the converted generator would require a wiring change that is somewhat involved. If this is a working tractor I would not hesitate to go to a 12 volt alternator w/ a built in regulator system. The existing wiring can be used with only a minimal modification. It would be cheaper and the parts are readily available. The most difficult part of the conversion is mounting the alternator and if you will go to the junk yard and get a couple old car brackets they can be modified to accomplish this task. Truly good 6 volt batteries are hard to come by and the price continues to rise. And finally, as you have found out, the tractor will crank a heck of a lot easier. I can not understand why the reluctance exists in converting a working tractor.
