Farmall H runs a while then quits

About two weeks ago I posted a message about my Farmall H stopping after running for anything from a few minutes to a half hour. I have a bit more to report after following up on some of the replies to that posting. I took the fuel line off the carb and cleaned the screen, which was quite dirty. Then I let about a gallon of gas drain out from the fuel line. It flowed freely so I assumed there is nothing plugging the line or tank. There is some sediment accumulating in the bowl under the tank so the tank is not real clean, but I have not yet drained all the gas to have a closer look. After this I tried starting it but it still would not run for more than five minutes. I then tried the suggestion posted by ltf which was to remove the drain plug from the carb and replace it with a barb fitting with clear tubing on it. With this in place I could see the gas level in the carb bowl. When I started the engine the gas level dropped immediately and it began to sputter. I found it would keep running if I plugged the open end of the tubing with my finger. Why would the gas level have dropped so suddenly? Should I have plugged the open end of the tubing before starting the engine? Could there be something wrong with the carburetor? Thanks to all who replied to my last posting, and I hope someone might have some more ideas.
