Sounds like points would be the weak link . 12 volts will not destroy the points extremely fast . The old cars had 12 volts to start then went to 9 volts . For point longivity . If the points were old you might have a problem with them. you do want have voltage drop for normal operation . Do you have voltage to the disributor ? If so cranking the engine over should get it running . Sounds like your very close to getting this over with . Are the points puffy white ?
