Bush hog speed

I have some kind of Massey-Iseki 26 hp, 3 speed diesel with a
a low, med and high speed also. I also has a 4 speed PTO.
My question is What gearing combination should I use? Can
the bush hog be spinning to fast? I cant tell much difference
in the different PTO gears. I have no manual for the tractor.
I there a way to tell how many RPM the shaft is turning?
The bush hog brand is a cheap-o Sunflower.
