Noisy Farmall Super A Transmission

My Farmall Super A transmission is noisy during operation in at least 1st,2nd and 3rd gears. I've never tried 4th. When going downhill, coasting in gear, the noise is greatly diminished. It is most noisy under load. I suspect some of the ball bearings are shot. Is this a job for a professional or can a shade tree like myself replace the bearings? I've worked on automobiles for years but never "split" a tractor.
Any info is welcome.
