All 6 volt 140s were originally positive ground. Would you locate the voltage regulator and describe it please? I agree and think your charging system is not working. The test, in removing the battery lead, mentioned earlier will verify this. Your best bet is to correct all the electrical faults and then you will have reliability. When you reposts with the requested info, I will follow up with the needed inputs. Look for a coil on your tractor, if you have one there will not be a magneto. Instead there will be a distributor.
