Thanks for the reply. I did check the voltage again. It still checks 12V with the points closed.
The resistor I mentioned may not really be a resistor. There is a wire from the key switch and the alternator on one side and the wire to the coil on the other. It looks like a small heating element inside (round spring-like coil). The resistance across it is only 2 ohms.
