Jeremy - From your description it sounds like you've got it wired alright. But if the ammeter reads backward (shows "+" when you first turn on the ignition), you need to swap the wiring at both terminals to get it to read right.

Regarding the "no charge" condition with the motor running, here's a couple things to try:

1 - The panel light may be too small. It must draw at least 200 milliamps for it to "turn on" the alternator at startup. Try substituting a #194 side marker lamp bult and see what happens.

2 - Note that the 10SI alternator has got to be run up to a fairly high speed before it will first "turn on". Try running the motor to max throttle for a moment and see what happens.

3 - If the above doesn't work, then suspect the alternator itself is not right. Most auto parts places (including my local Auto Zone) will test them for free. Suggest running the alternator in to them and take advantage of this service.

The #14 wire is small - though the alternator should still work. It just won't provide as much current with the smaller wire. Recommend replacing the BAT to ammeter wire with #10 wire. (The control wiring to the alternator can remain #14 however).

Post back what you find...

Bob M
