Try this, when it's running CAREFULLY remove the ground cable from the battery. If it quits suspect regulator/generator.
Is this a 12 volt system or 6? If its 6 you need positive ground. I'm betting you've got a 12, but I'm unsure why things wouldn't work hooked up to positive ground. I used a Super M for many hours with the battery hooked up backwards. We used to boost it off the pickup and it would run a good ten or fifteen hours like that. It would even start six or seven times, no problem.
Of course it ate batteries, but what do you want?
