Jeremy - Sounds like you have 2 things going on: 1 - The ammeter is wired backward (should show a couple amps discharge when you first pull out the ign switch and before you start the engine). Solution is to simply swap all wiring connections at the two ammeter posts. 2 - The indicator light staying lit while running says the alternator's not charging. The light should go out, and the ammeter should show a sudden 20 to 30 amp charge as engine RPMs run up after starting. Some possible causes: Wiring is not right, the current rating on the warning lamp is too small (needs to be 200 milliamps or so - like a #194 auto instrument panel/side marker lamp or similar), or the alternator itself is bad. Note - You are fine with no ballast resistor and a 12 volt coil. Good luck, and post back your findings.... Bob M
